The Fundamentals

The four metrics every SaaS benchmark starts with

A clear, shared definition for each metric is the foundation of any credible peer comparison.

ARR

Annual Recurring Revenue

The value of contracted recurring revenue normalized to a one-year period, used as the primary top-line growth indicator for subscription businesses.

MRR

Monthly Recurring Revenue

Recurring revenue normalized to a monthly cadence, commonly broken into new, expansion, contraction and churned components for trend analysis.

NDR

Net Dollar Retention

The percentage of recurring revenue retained from an existing cohort over a period, net of expansion, contraction, and churn.

GRR

Gross Revenue Retention

The percentage of recurring revenue retained from an existing cohort excluding any upside from expansion, capped at 100%.

Methodology

How a metrics reconciliation works

The same four-step approach we describe throughout our resources, applied consistently across every metric.

1

Collect

Gather billing, contract, and usage data from source systems for the reporting period.

2

Normalize

Apply consistent definitions so figures are calculated the same way every period.

3

Reconcile

Cross-check recurring revenue components against finance records to resolve discrepancies.

4

Benchmark

Compare reconciled figures against peer cohorts of similar size, stage, and business model.

Why It Matters

Numbers only tell a story next to a peer benchmark

An NDR of 105% can be strong or weak depending entirely on company size, industry, and pricing model. Context is what turns a metric into an insight.

  • Understand which peer cohort is comparable to your business
  • Avoid misleading comparisons between mismatched company stages
  • Communicate metrics clearly to boards, investors, and teams
  • Spot definitional gaps before they become reporting errors
